Harbour Lights Gallery – An Introduction
Welcome to the Harbour Lights Gallery Blog!
Let’s start with a little introduction, we are a family run art gallery set in the beautiful harbour Village of Porthgain on the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales. The Gallery is owned by Annie and Huw Davies and I am their Daughter Katy, I manage the gallery day to day , My Cousin Douglas is in charge of the framing at the Gallery, so its a proper family affair!
After running a very successful Restaurant/Gallery (Opening in 1985) Huw and Annie Davies decided to close the Restaurant side of their business in 2002 and concentrate totally on the Gallery. Although none of us are particularly good with a paintbrush, at all! We all have a great love and interest in art which I think helps us choose some fantastic artists and paintings for our Gallery. I have to admit, we are a little spoilt for choice as Pembrokeshire attracts a huge amount of artistic talent, including the likes of Graham Sutherland and John Piper, who both spent a lot of time here and took a huge amount of inspiration from its coast and landscape. Even Sir Kyffin Williams made it down to Pembrokeshire from his already fabulous surroundings of North Wales. At Harbour Lights we aim to show a large selection of styles with over 40 artists. We don’t do exhibitions, just a constant ever changing selection of Original paintings, Limited Edition prints, Sculpture and photography. We hope that it makes it an interesting Gallery to visit, and also have enough of a selection of styles, mediums and prices to suit everyone.
Location, Location, Location,
Location is always important, and we are very lucky to be where we are. Porthgain has become a gem of the Pembrokeshire coast, attracting thousands of people every year. We are happy to say that we have some great customers who we see year after year and we even get coach loads from the Cruise liners that dock in Fishguard now, putting us well and truly on the map! I won’t be going into the history of the village, as its long, very interesting and Ive said it so many times it no longer make sense! But please do google it, look at the photos and the history and see what all the fuss is about! Other selling points of the village are obviously the beautiful harbour, coast path, free parking, The Sloop inn, The Shed Bistro and the Alun Davies gallery with Sion his big white dog! What more do you want?!
As well as the Gallery we also have a fantastic holiday cottage, Gallery cottage which we rent out from March to October. The cottage has been many things over the years, firstly our house while we ran the restaurant, then a gallery, then a frame shop and now a wonderful Holiday cottage. We have some wonderful regular visitors to the cottage that we see year after year, some of them for three weeks at a time! The cottage sleeps four in two rooms, have a private decking area with seating in the back, lovely little kitchen and a living room with a log burner and Sky TV. Its the perfect place to explore Pembrokeshire with easy access to the coast path, the Strumble shuttle bus, and of course your steps away from The Sloop and The Shed!
Well that’s enough of the history and info about the Gallery for now. This blog will be updated as and when I feel like I have something interesting to tell you all!
It will hopefully feature news about the gallery and gallery artists, features on framing and art in Pembrokeshire as well as the general goings on of the gallery and porthgain.
If you would like to receive news of new artwork, please do feel free to add your details to our mailing list, which is separate to this and goes out every two weeks or so, with details of new paintings and artists. Mailing list sign up form
Bye for now!
